LOCATION
The terroir of Swartland is influenced not only by its diverse soils and favourable climate but also by its topography and proximity to the ocean. The undulating landscape and varying altitudes provide different microclimates within the region, offering winemakers opportunities to cultivate a variety of grape cultivars successfully. The ocean’s influence, though indirect, has a cooling effect on the vineyards, contributing to the unique flavour profile and balance in the wines. The fact that most of the Swartland is farmed under dry-land conditions led to the region being branded as producing “small berries with big taste”.
TERROIR
The terroir of Swartland imparts a distinct character to the wines, often characterized by ripe fruit flavours, minerality, and a sense of place. The soils range from decomposed granite and shale to schist, clay, and sandstone. The variation in soil types allows for different drainage capabilities, water retention, and mineral content. Our Chenin Blanc is a trellised vine that is planted on deep red Hutton soils with roots that penetrate deep in their search for water. The Chenin Blanc Reserve is bush vines planted on decomposed granite. Our Pinotage comes from two sites: one contains trellised vines planted on red Hutton soils, and the other (bush vines) are planted on decomposed granite, which gives it freshness and minerality. The bush vine vineyard’s grapes are used for the Pinotage Reserve. Bush vines give darker fruits and structure, whereas trellised vines give the characteristic red berry fruit.
CLIMATE
The Swartland wine region experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The vineyards benefit from ample sunlight during the growing season, aiding in the ripening of grapes and the development of optimal sugar levels and flavours. The cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean moderates temperatures, promoting the retention of acidity in the grapes. This climatic balance allows for a gradual ripening process, resulting in well-balanced wines with pronounced fruitiness and complexity.
